Interview with Jean Perrault
Performer, conductor and composer, Jean “Rudy” Perrault is Director of
Orchestras and professor of violin and viola at the University of
Minnesota-Duluth. At UMD Rudy coaches chamber music, conducts both the
Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, teaches string techniques and the
fundamentals of conducting.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he earned his Master's degree in
performance from Temple University in Philadelphia. He has conducted
for the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, the Holy Trinity Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Paris Sinfonietta and the Karelia State Conservatory
Orchestra in Russia.
He has participated in many prestigious music festivals including
Aspen, Tanglewood, and Chautauqua. Rudy has performed with the
Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, the New York Virtuosi, the New York
Pops, the Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of
Philadelphia, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the Broadway show "Beauty
and the Beast".
More recently he has been editing and orchestrating the piano works of
Haitian classical composers. His most recent composition, "Exodus", has
been recorded by the Borromeo String Quartet and can be heard on their
"Living Archives" label.
Rudy Perrault will be performing at the Festival of Cultures in Duluth
on Saturday, July 22 at 12:30pm at the second stage at Bayfront.
