Although I have had many outstanding teachers over the years and have been in contact with many influential artists - the fact remains that I am essentially and almost completely - a self-taught artist.
As the New Year unfolds - I'm continuing to work at connecting with the primal energy of memories - both past and future - drawing upon that energy to generate and establish a visual language that speaks to and from my authentic self - expressing subjects and themes relative to my aging and preparing for the final stages of my life. My belief is that - at this point in our global history where technology both unites us and separates us - one person's story is as important to record as that of our society en masse. Taking the Buddhist view of nothing being independent of everything else - by looking at one life a window opens unto the lives of many. I do not title my works. I prefer to let viewers decide for themselves how to interpret what they're experiencing. What that becomes is anyone's guess - perhaps the best stories are drawn from their own thoughts - with the individual images providing a frame to hang them upon. One likely outcome is that a self-portrait can segue into a portrait of any man or every man.
