Experience

Began drawing & painting as a very young child - Inspired and encouraged by my Mother, who provided my earliest informal lessons in drawing.

Studied commercial art & illustration at Minneapolis Vocational High School (for 3 years) and Minneapolis Vocational Institute (for 2 years).

Additional instruction in fine arts & computer art during the last decade at The Minneapolis School of Art and The Minneapolis College of Art & Design.

Two visits during 2001/2002 to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for independent study in area museums/galleries.

Working vacation to Japan in Fall of 2003 to visit / study / photograph natural subjects, temples, museums, and galleries in Kamakura, Yokohama, Zushi, Tokyo, Fuji, and other locations.

Fall of 2003 - Began collaborating with Kanti Jocelyn-Bisgaard, of Kamakura, Japan, on projects aimed at providing her with digital images to be used as possible elements in her future works with textiles and mixed-media. (A collaborative webpage at www.mnartists.org is forthcoming).

Winter of early 2004 - began volunteering as an on-line resource for educators, teachers, and students searching for information/interactions concerning the creative life and career of a working artist. The work includes providing project coordinator with examples of artworks for distribution to teachers for classroom use. Project is overseen by Judy Decker of The Incredible Art Department at ArtsEdNet.org - a Getty Foundation educational sub-site.

On-going - Exploring the use of Internet/Web as a tool for interactions and collaborations with other artists and organizations.

Fall 2004 - Returned to Japan to work on collaborative projects with Kanti Jocelyn-Bisgaard; Visits to Buddhist and Shinto temples, including two days to visit temples and shrines in Nikko; Visited Tokyo National Museum to view Japanese and Chinese collections with a focus on calligraphic works.

Fall 2005 - Traveled once more to Japan to work on collaborative projects with Kanti Jocelyn-Bisgaard; Visits to Buddhist and Shinto shrines and temples, including those in or near Kamakura. Visited Shiko Munakata Museum in Kamakura to view works by the master artist of contemporary woodblock printing. Particular focus on Buddhist and Shinto cemetaries.

2007/2011 - Creates on-line collections for mnartists.org featuring works by artist-members in order to increase their visibility on the Web.

Collections

James Michael Lawrence's art (in hard copy format) is included in many public and private collections in the United States and abroad.

James Michael Lawrence (in collaboration with his husband - Peter Micheal Wilson) is heavily represented via their archive (which will expand yearly) at The Tretter Collection At The Andersen Library - University Of Minnesota. Included in the archive are written biographical information - memoribilia - several years of Lawrence's (primarily) artworks stored on disks - posters - documentaion of exhibitions - etc.

Lawrence and Wilson are very grateful to Jean Tretter for inviting them to create their archive at the University - they have descibed their doing so as "the feather in our caps" vis-a-vis their lives as gay men - both public and private citizens.
