Experience

I am an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin. My mother taught me how to bead on a loom at the age of five. She taught me to include an intentional flaw in my beadwork to symbolize that we are all human beings and we all make mistakes...nobody is perfect. All my work includes an intentional flaw. I eventually taught myself the appliqué style of beading. I have experimented with my beadwork over the last 50 years.

After my older brother John J. Lemon, Jr. passed on I received a catalog in the mail addressed to my brother John. The catalog included the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel and inspired me to bead Turtles using the coins on the back of my Turtle designs. I began to bead consistently on a special material incorporating the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel. Each Turtle with the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel created is dedicated to my brother John.

My oldest daughter encouraged me to enter my first art show in 2007. It was the Spiritual Art Show in Minneapolis. I won the Honorable Mention Award. I have since been honored with other awards. My work is collected as often by lovers of contemporary art as by those specializing in Authentic Native American Fine Art.

My work is an expression of the spirituality of ancient traditions and a culture that has survived thousands of years. My Turtle images combine beadwork with a variety of objects such as pins, buttons, ivory, stone, and porcupine quills. I bead on a variety of papers using a one-needle technique. My artwork is an expression based on the rich Native American culture, especially of the Ojibwe and the Oneida Nations, combined with the influence of contemporary materials and ideals of the modern world.

I began to sign my artwork Limón in honor of my grandfather Gavino Limón in the 90’s. My wife Rachel and I legally changed our name to Limón in November of 2008 before the birth of our fourth child Gavino Joseph Limón. Our three oldest children are Jaime Elizabeth Lemon-Witt, Douglas K. Lemon, Jr. and Ashlee Taylor Lemon.

I am a Collection in Focus Guide for the galleries of the Americas at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA).

Special orders and commissions accepted.
Archival prints are available for all originals.
