Artist Statement
Rene Lalique, one of history's greatest jewelers, elevated jewelry to the status of fine art. I embrace the same philosophical approach to the design of my jewelry. All of my work is hand fabricated with traditional metal smith techniques to create each piece, giving me immense satisfaction knowing that each creation is truly unique. My primamry source of inspiration comes from Art Nouveau movement with its flowing curvilinear and female forms as well as organic, floral and other plant-inspired motifs, and also, the industrial designs of the Art Deco movement, in which polished steel epitomized simplicity and strength. The extavagance, flamboyance and complexity of the Baroque style as well as the eccentricity and use of vivid colors of the Renaissance era are also a source of enlightenmnet in my work. Ulitimately, my designs range from understand simplicity, to bold architectural shapes, to ornate elegant motifs.
I use silver in my work in such a way that it represents the material's true quality, fine reflective surfaces, crisp edges, and structural harmony. The paradox that "soft", fluid -looking metal has evolved from flat, stiff rectangles through force, determination, and tenacity enchants me. I am entranced by the metal's progressive transformation - through hammering, persuasion, and struggle - from a lifeless plane of metal towards an object of vibrancy, unity and fluidity. I combine precious stones to enhance the piece. Often these elements lead and direct me to create my designs. My deep interes in architecture and the history of painting - the combination of tone colors and brush strokes, often infiltrate my designs.
To me, the greates compliment is when soemeone incrporates one of my unique pieces into their own distinctive style.
