Douglas, thank you thank you thank you.

No one's ever been kind enough to take the time and lay it all out like that for me before - you democratize the knowledge. thank you.

Thanks, Douglas.
Do you know? Did Jan go to Brown college awhile back? There was a Jan Elftman, or real close to that name, that I went there with. She was an older artist. Was very nice to me. My ex aunt dated Frank for some time a number of years ago now. Thanks for the other info.

Mr. Wormley came to Shmallery before and during the opening. I'd like a chance to really sit down and have a talk with this guy. Thanks for coming Wormley. I think some others of the older crowd were there, but I was soo fried by opening night, it was hard to really focus.

Hi Doug.

I wish I could distinguish myself by better describing a brief meeting or two we've shared, but maybe its not so important to figure that out afterall. At any rate, aside from the fact that tripping upon this site has me greatly intrigued, at the moment I have a specific request. You mentioned Dick Brewer in a response written in Feb 04, and I'm wondering, along with my friend Ronald Dahl, if you know how to contact him. If you (or anyone else) have some info, we feel confident Dick would be pleased to hear from us. If you would be so kind as to respond to these addresses, or even pass them on to Dick, we would be much obliged.

Most artists directed groups have ultimately succumbed to the weakness of it's individual member's need for self glory at the expense of the stated mission of the group.

Artists should school themselves on the nature of enduring organizations before starting up any new groups.

It is sound advise to "young" artists to first get experience inside an old and warped group before giving birth to yet another "we will do it better" monstrosity that consumes vitality and energy that is sorely needed in existing organizations.

So what would be the point of organizing? Well good things do come out of some of these efforts. But the cost is always bourne by one artist that gives up the art to practice the craft of organizational management. This is a serious question that each artist show ask themselves before they get involved.

Great to see there is still interest in the "early" art scene in MPLS. I was an art student at MCAD from 1981-83, and the UofM from 84-85. Got my degree in 1985. Met Colleen Barnett who founded Riflesport Gallery in my Senior Seminar class. Helped her build the first walls and install shows and book performances there. I remember the Art Crawls as being fantastic at the time, and the various small spaces, especially Circus to the Trade, which was perhaps even wilder than Riflesport. After the Wyman building galleries closed for the night, everyone usually ended up at Riflesprot till all hours.

If anyone is still monitoring this site feel free to contact me at Guinol@hotmail.com. It would be fun to re-connect with some of the old crew.

Someone mentioned Frank Gaard--I had Frank as a teacher at MCAD and would agree that he would be one of the best resources for information (if you can wade through the usually entertaining digressions). Hope the MPLS scene gets the recognition it deserves.

Please do put up the information:

We regulars are always "warping" the forms to see if it can be more than what the "staff" thinks it should be; some of us show each other our latest work that we will not post on our page until we have a show; so we sort of draw a curtain for our online circle of friends; kinda a cool thing when you think of it.

Please give away the secerts of the birth of that gallery; it should help many a youngster to "know" what they are getting into before they scrafice the "art makeing" for the gallery.
