Bob, I read the article. It seems show the humaness of the critic, they are as self conscious as artists are. What I think is intersting in the article is that there is a dialog opened up that is searching for a better role for the critic. I think most critics play it safe and don't really have enough background to write articles of depth unless they write for the less than one percent of the people that read the art magazines which cover less than one percent of artists. I see a real need for local critics to find out what is important about art and write that in to the articles. So the general public can have a bette appreeciation of what their looking at and why local artist are inmportant to culture and broadening the minds. I feel like with all the cutting out of accessible art education in this country it is important that those who are experts at veiwing art step up and use their power to help people understand art. Otherwise they are just being elitist and cutting more and more people from the culture of this society. which in turn cause more social problems and turns people from a humane existence. Art and Culture have always been a binder and equalizer for society by evoking the mystery, wonder, and creativity that inspires unity in the human experience. So I think it could be a good discussion for critics to be having. But I also think local critics could do more research in to what is happening around town by actually visiting artist and seeing what their up to and asking them who they think is doing great work in the area. What do you think about art critics being liasons of culture? Or working to support art for the people by making their articles pertinent for your average joe?
