Hi everyone. I'm relatively new also. Joined within the past month. Work to support my art, which I hope will support me someday. I'm just getting serious about it and have signed a lease for a studio at 1618 Central NE. It will take time to get a body of work organized but I feel ready to actually do it rather than talk about it. I've lived in NE for 6 years now fixing up a 100 year old house. I don't recall how I found this site, but I'm so glad I did. I'm truly enjoying reading the posts and sharing information.

I would like to post an audition notice and wonder if you have a designated spot for this. Thanks

I forgot to say "hi", I just started babbling.

I'm Jared, at my day job. I am also doing a show about immigration for elementary schools part-time. An artistic associate with CalibanCo Theatre (www.calibanco.org), and we're touring our version of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" around Minneapolis parks this summer (I play Caliban the island "monster").

Semi-pro neophyte photographer says "hello"

Hi there, all. I make my living as a written-word journalist, with the occasional photo published along with my articles. It's probably safe to say I've been bitten by the photo bug, and I want to learn more!

I'd love to assist any pro photographers on a shoot once in a while. I've got a fairly flexible schedule, and I'll settle for grunt pay and some of your wisdom.

Word out to other musicians, and to the good folk running this site. After those kind words, now I'll get crabby.

I'd like to give feedback about the site, but I don't know where to put it. It is not a very friendly site. I am quite confused by it. It is especially unfriendly to musicians.

Let's take the example of the home page:

- What do I see first? "New Artwork", "Featured Collections". This is well done, very eye catching. Where's the music? I hunted and hunted. There is 1 article of 8 on the home page about music. There are 0 of 10 news items. Oh!! There is "Recent video/music/writing" .. well, why isn't it parallel to "New Artwork" and "Featured collections"? I think I know. a) It is easier to make a web site that has something visual; b) There is only room for 2 visual blocks side by side. Why not let artists associate an image (e.g., album cover) with a song, and show the image along with a link to the song?

- Unlike every other site on the Internet (that uses either a top bar or a sidebar), this site has a humongous 4 x 3 grid of options. Apparently the most important thing you want me to know (after the site logo) is that I can log off, because that's what my eye catches first.

- Why is the Artists menu "Media Arts", "Literary Arts", "Performing Arts" etc.? What is 'media arts'? These are such stuffy adjectives! How about "film-makers", "writers", "musicians"? Look, I know those are SUB-categories in the categories you're listing in the Artists menu, but the categories are so vague I don't know what the heck they're about! You have to use words normal people know, or this will be a site only for stuffy people!

etc. etc.

Go look at some sites that present consumables in categories: www.amazon.com, www.ebay.com, www.half.com. I'm not saying this is a site about buying things, but look at them anyway. They work, and people are used to them! All of these 3 have totally understandable, normal words running down a left sidebar. What does this tell us?

Also, go look at some sites trying to present music: www.cdbaby.com, garageband.com. cdbaby.com: okay, they chose to put the human-understandable list of categories on the right, but it's still there ("Choose a STYLE: "Blues", "Classical", "Country", etc.)

garageband.com frankly I find somewhat confusing too, kind of crappy home page. However, the artist's page isn't so bad. Description down the middle, songs and albums down the right. Very SPECIFIC things right away. The artist's web page here is .. well, not bad, but a little wifty.

I have tons more feedback like this. Look, I appreciate such a site, but I want someone to find my CDs and buy them, and hire me for a gig, and contact me to do a commissioned work. We need a down-to-earth website for these kinds of things!

My $2.

Dan

Just doing a little on-line wandering and here you all are! I see Sharon Parker's name a little further down. She and I mess about with artist trading cards...little bits 'o art...big time fun! If anyone is interested in knowing more...

After 20 years of art teaching, I took adventage of an early retirement opportunity. Now I do some independent artist residencies in schools around the metro area and also some visual art staff development work for teachers.

I took my first book arts class about 15 years ago at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and it was true love!
My own work and the areas I focus on in my new "retired" teaching role include bookmaking, visual journaling, collage, and drawing. I did a short artist trading card residency with third graders a couple of weeks ago and found out this was a great thing for kids, too.

Kudos to all of you out there who make the world a more artful place!

Kudos Kathy, we love art cards!

Well written Dan. It's good to critique this site. You may find ways to use it better. Maybe something special is planned for music, once the Comp CD is released?
There has been desire for more musicians on here. As far as I know, locals use http://www.musicscene.org/ and http://www.cdbaby.com/ .

But good luck with the references. I looked into how other forums work better then this one, but we just toe the quo and fail to change this JIVE business. For instance, avatars might be nice...? Ahh, but reserved for the PAYED writers on the front page format.

Hey wellcome around.

What are "art cards?" The concept sounds interesting.
