Art Criticism...

I just picked up the book Air Guitar by Dave hickey and am finding it a refreshing alternative to the staid academic writing I associate with most arts criticism. It's a little like if Hunter Thompson wrote about art, which is a good thing! If anyone else has read the book and would like to discuss it, I'm game.

If you have any recommendations for other writers or books that changed your perspective, let us know about them as well. Perhaps conversations on specific works will even lead to a discussion on the greater role of arts criticism.

If there are any writers themselves out there (hint, hint), please join in and give us your thoughts and favorites as well.

If someone could put down some sort of basic idea as to what art criticism is and what its purpose/objective is, that would be nice. I've only just begun to even think about it, after years of avoiding knowing anything about the conventional art-world. Thus, my disappointment at the absence of our critics/writers. Really, after having a "i don't really give a shit about the art-world attitude" for most of my life, its a bad first impression to see real writers/critics bail out like that. This sparks my interest in them however, because it reminds me of the same attitude I often take as an artist... well, anyways

Good point. I'll have to stop back over there. I specifically had in mind art criticism here though, as opposed to the wide range of books suggested over there.

Visual Arts Critics Union of Minnesota
Come hear critics at work: the Trialogues continue!

The MAEP and the Visual Art Critics Union of Minnesota (VACUM) will be offering a "Critics Trialogue" on Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, featuring painter and art critic David Lefkowitz. Mr. Lefkowitz will lead a gallery tour of "Long Afternoon," an exhibition of photographs and mixed media paintings by Celeste Nelms and Carolyn Swiszcz. The Critics Trialogue is designed to bring together critics, artists, and the public to explore the creative possibilities of criticism. This event is free and open to the public.
