Hello All,

I think this is really kewl. I have to say that MN has some really kewl factors esp. it's art scene. I am born and raised in MN, and a big supporter of the arts.

I am currently taking a history research course dealing with specifically about MN. I wanted to do something kewl and interesting to me. Also something not a whole lot of people know about. I want to research about the beginning/the start of the hip hop scene here in MN. I think it is something people would be interested about knowing. It's living history and should be shared (that is my take on it).

If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Or even point me into the right direction.

Thanks.

Amy

Amy,

Perhaps you attended Intermedia Arts' B-Girl Be summit and this will be old news to you. Just in case, though, I thought I'd give you their web site address on their current project regarding hip hop/girls working in the performing arts. Two of my students attended the summit on June 3rd and said that it was packed. I've heard Desdamona, one of the organizers, perform in person. She is not only a wonderful poet, she is also very generous in providing resources to those interested in this subject.

Here is a link to this topic: http://www.intermediaarts.org/pages/programs/b-girl_be/howcanihelp_BGB.htm

Happy researching!

Amy, you might want to check out an issue of the City Pages from last summer, which had an article on the history of MN hip-hop. You can probably find it at the CP site. I think mnartists.org may have a couple of old articles that have something about hip-hop also. You can check out some of the local shows too, and maybe bump into people with some knowledge on the subject. Personally, I think there are connections between other "underground" cultures that mix in with hip-hop to some degree. Especially with grafitti, which has a lot of history crossing over with the punk scene, here and in other cities. There was a woman a number of years ago who had compiled quite a bit of history of the mn graf scene, and was seeking getting it published into a book. I don't know that it ever happened. I think here name was Melisa. (not Melissa) Anyways, good luck.

Hello Mr. Rusch, Mr. Spiczka, Ms. DeSteno, and everyone.

I really appreciate mnartists.org since I do not have a web site as yet. I've managed to pack a large quantity of my odd stuff on the database thanks to the generous portion of available space.

I paint in acrylics mostly. My topics include illustrations, portraits and topological abstracts. The abstracts depict four-dimensional objects (or "manifolds") cross-sectioned in three-space and then again in two-space. My purpose is to challenge the viewer to guess what the objects actually look like based on these double-reductions cross sections. I first noticed one of these topological paintings at the University of Texas math department back in 1974. The painter wanted to illustrate the shape resulting from coordinates produced by an equation. She painted it as a balloon being blown up by a child.

My illustrations include a lot of transport subjects, some melancholy subjects, cityscapes, and other stuff. The portraits tend to be family, friends, commissions, and celebrities (including authors and scientists). I paint most of my work on 24" x 36" or 16" x 20" canvases for convenience. I also draw stuff with "Paint" on the computer... mostly transport subjects.

Lately I have been painting a lot of airplanes (crazy since I avoid flying whenever possible). I have also been getting into some Minnesota historical stuff (more of this will show up in my portfolio later). I am especially interested in Saint Paul Art Deco.

I was very happy to win a spot in the 2005 Fall Saint Paul Art Crawl poster competition set. I plan to have a show of about 40 paintings in the Cosmopolitan (where I live) in Lowertown.

Anyway, thank you for the opportunity to participate in the forum. I am looking forward to reading more of the back articles (as I slowly advance to the rear).

sorry, I didn't pick the nickname... it's not my fault).
