QUESTION 1: HOW TO PROTECT, IMPROVE AND BRAINSTORM NEW RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE MEDIA IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING MEDIA WORLD? (convened by Philip Bither; session merged with...)

QUESTION 2: WHO CAN WE PAY AT WHAT MEDIA DEVICE TO EFFECTIVELY WRITE, CRITIQUE, PROMOTE DANCE & PERFORMANCE? (convened by Robert Haarman)

SUMMARY:

Three action points

1) a letter/e-mail writing advocacy campaign to the two major dailies being both respectful of the coverage of dance they’ve done but being forceful about maintaining that coverage for dance.

Contact: John Munger and Wendy Kaufman who will help coordinate some of the organizing around this effort. Those who write for the dailies will get us the e-mail addresses of the key people to communicate with as we create a broad-based advocacy campaign scheduled for the summer and fall, especially as we move into the fall dance season.

2) Looking at mnartists.org as a new media vehicle that can more effectively used by the dance community

Contact: Lightsey Darst, who writes for mnartists.org will convene a meeting with Colin Rusch, Kathleen and others from the Walker to address how the site can be better utilized for dance and to spark conversation around the pressing issues that face dance as an art form

3) Explore TPT’s Minnesota Channel (an idea that overlapped with the Media Visibility group convened by Craig Harris)

Contact: Maureen Koelsch will meet with Tom Trow to discuss possibilities for getting more exposure for local dance companies and dance in general on TPT

Other areas that deserve more attention to expand audience for dance in Minnesota include:
· commercial radio
· Minnesota Public Radio
· commercial studios
· dance competitions

In Chicago, HMS Media has created “The Chicago Dance Project” – a 13-part series profiling 40 Chicago dance companies, broadcast Sunday evenings on the local PBS station over a period of several months.

Budget of $200,000 - funded by the Chicago Community Trust.

how great to see there were some follow-up suggestions to this session. I'd be happy to be on follow-up actions even though I was away for the initial day of meetings which I regret. Good this topic was on the aggenda. Judith Brin Ingber

Ray after looking over this "Featured Forum" I have come to the conclusion that dancers can not talk and think while they dance? Sorta like chewing gum and crossing the road?

What do you think?
