All things Ebay

I have been thinking about posting my work on Ebay for some time but hesitated due to my misunderstanding of their insertion fee structure. Now that I am better informed, I think I will post something and see what happens. It could potentially (or perhaps already is) be an effective form of inexpensive advertising for artists.

Anyone out there use Ebay as a marketing tool? Have positive or negative stories to share? This is the place for 'em!

I was hunting around and found something called Ebay radio on some entrepreneur network.

Ray, you mean there is an Ebay radio station? What do they talk about?

Just got done listing my sculpture. Took me the better part of 2 hours but should go quicker in the future. The coding for my description layout is what hung me up. Since you can't list your website in the description, one trick I learned this weekend is to put text in your image where the ebay police have a harder time finding it. Any suggestions for improvements are welcome. I have a feeling there is a whole arcane culture surrounding the proper way to display/word one's work.

Whoohoo! Go Sam! That looks great. I hope you get some bids soon. I will admit I know next to nothing about selling on ebay, but I hope folks like X will post so I can learn more.

heres the link http://www.wsradio.com/ebayradio/
They talk about marketing and sucess stories. The folks who make a living off ebay teaching the masses. Very interesting. Give it a listen.
Cool posting yourself by the way Sam. Looks like you have it figured out. Next one will prolly only take you an hour.

Real cool Sam. I registered with e-bay a year or more ago, then never did anything. Now my son wants to go into it, so I guess it's time. If I can remember my password.

Yeah Ray, thanks for the link. I'm thinking of compiling a list of good links one day and traveling on down to our local library with their highspeed internet and listening/watching them all. To try that here is just futile.

X- I know it's illegal which is why my heart stopped when I tried to use the link you copied from my earlier post and it didn't open. After a little investigation, there is a number missing so no problems. I'm going to go try set up the About Me page now and see how that works. I will definitely keep you posted on the reaction. So far over 20 hits!

Well there ya go - that's the key. Tie in your ebay ads to forums or other types of web traffic. Go find more forums Sam - and conquer!

Go Me!!!

That is probably a good suggestion to post notices on other forums, but that approaches spam and I have a problem with that. If it is a forum I am already on (but who has time for more than this one?) I think it is an acceptable, even educational tool. (See this thread.)

I'm still trying to get this advertising thing down, which is what I mostly see Ebay as for me. Perhaps if artists were as adept at advertising as toothpaste makers are, everyone would feel obligated to look at a new work of art twice a day? How much of our problems stem from a poor understanding of marketing? And would we inevitably contribute as much evil to the world as other marketers if we did play the game?

I've also been monitoring the counter on my website to check for increased traffic. I have about 60 new hits since I posted the Ebay listing. I'm pretty sure most all of those are from Ebay as my traffic has been stagnant the past couple weeks.

We need to have more people do this as well to get a larger sample of the effectiveness of Ebay listings. Dale, now is the time!...
