QUESTION 1: HOW TO PROTECT, IMPROVE AND BRAINSTORM NEW RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE MEDIA IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING MEDIA WORLD? (convened by Philip Bither; session merged with...)
QUESTION 2: WHO CAN WE PAY AT WHAT MEDIA DEVICE TO EFFECTIVELY WRITE, CRITIQUE, PROMOTE DANCE & PERFORMANCE? (convened by Robert Haarman)
SUMMARY: report by Phillip Bither
Our theme was the changing relationship between dance and various media forms. There was quite a bit of discussion about newspapers, as there always is, but there was also a recognition that newspapers are generally in decline, while it’s essential that we continue to advocate with publishers and editors whenever newspaper coverage of dance declines, but that is just part of the equation. We need to recognize that, as a community, we need to look for other outlets for coverage, because we don’t see newspapers as, necessarily, the answer in the future.
Brainstorming and ideas about “other ways” to get media coverage: radio, tv, cable television, other kinds of publications – community newspapers, culturally specific newspapers, publications beyond the two daily newspapers. There was a great deal of conversation around new media sources. Younger people are primarily getting their information from the internet. All kinds of ideas are emerging like dance blogs, what the Fringe Festival does very well—post-performance on-line conversations, on-line journals. mnartist.org is trying to do more around dance. But new media needs to figure out ways to pay writers for their work on dance and to develop better filters for those forms.
There was also quite a bit of discussion around advocacy…national efforts to try to raise the visibility and interest in dance, as well as local efforts. There are interesting examples in Chicago and the Canada Council. How to develop better writers and new writers for the form? Some discussion around the fact that more and more people are making their decisions around the visual stimuli, so dance artists and dance companies need to create effective visual imagery of their performances to spark interest.
In the end we can to the conclusion that this is a pro-activist stance that each of us have to take in any of these responses --- whether it’s new media, advocacy within the print media or with broadcast media.
