QUESTION: HOW CAN ORGANIZATIONS WITH EXISTING SPACE SUITABLE FOR INTIMATE PERFORMANCE BECOME MORE ACCESSIBLE TO PERFORMERS LOOKING FOR SUCH SPACE? (convened by Donna Bachman)
SUMMARY: report by Denise Tennen
This session consisted of a wide range of people from those just starting out as performers and those considering becoming performers to well established groups and less established groups. Each of these groups had different needs.
There is a need for a clearinghouse for space. The Minnesota Dance Alliance used to performer some of that function. Perhaps if a new service organization emerges it can fulfill that function again, but that will take some time to develop and in the interim we can tap into existing organizations and resources.
Idea: www.mnartists.org serves as a space clearinghouse for visual artists, can it be expanded to serve dance artists, too.
SESSION NOTES:
Topic: How do people looking for intimate space to rehearse/workshop/perform find it, and how do such venues find these performers
Convener: Donna Bachman
Participants: Lise Houlton Ellen Keane Galen Treuer Denise Tennen Mike Grogan Bob Booker Jeff Bartlett Sandy Hale Lisa McLean
What already exists: Red Eye $500 to book Patrick’s Franklin, Artworks Intermedia Arts Ramsey International fine Arts Center Other highschools with great performance spaces Cross links with student musicians as pit orchestra for ballet (GTCYS?) Restaurants Bowling alleys Churches/synagogues, other places of worship (Walker Community Church) 6a
Intent: Opportunity for young choreographers to present work Also a place to practice?
Needs: Someone who can guide producing of work
Questions: How much tech, How much marketing support Cost? Do some groups want to commit to a set time slot at a specific venue Is there a possibility to hook with existing venues that already have “AUDIENCE” (restaurants, bowling alleys) for the above, what are the permits needed could there be an intermediary could there be a guidebook to “the system”
6A parameters 40x70 200 max people no selling of alcohol, can give away
possible uses for 6a workshops and classes MDT looking to sublease space to others
Discussion about needs of individual new performers and also about small but more established groups.
To what degree are you serving artists and to what degree is serving audience? This is about serving the artists.
Good if there was a specific venue, to have a choreographer’s evening on a regular basis.
Next steps/recommendations: Doesn’t seem to be next steps for this particular group There seems to be a need for a clearing house for people to get info about space rental, rehearsal and performance Can there be a link made with artspace as providing that clearinghouse of spaces Who might fund creating the list of available spaces so it could be turned over to an already existing organization such as artspace
Needs to be a place so that people can look for spaces and people who have spaces available for rent can post them
