I consider them a business expense so yes, I deduct them. Generally speaking, if I see a fee I don't apply. But I can understand the reason both legitemate as well as shady venues use them. The shady for the obvious reason of making money and taking advantage of those desparate to show. The legitemate to cover cost as well as perhaps "weeding out" a number of applications to reduce the huge pile they have to review. I imagine the more prestigious the venue, the more responses they receive. Generally speaking, I'd say most of them fall below the quality they're interested in so anything to reduce that number could be a good thing. Of course, they also eliminate the artist making quality work that won't apply for a fee just on principle.

I had a dicsussion with Chris Eilers a while back. He's a good guy and probably watching as we type. He did listen to what I had to say which I respect whole heartedly and it will be interesting to see what next years contest is like. I think the point of the conversation has less to do with DB and more with an example of the art climate here as a whole.

I say change is eminent and let's as artist be responsible for helping the change along.

I have a problem with the fees, but both good points Sam and James. I had not considered the tax deduction, being so new at this. I suppose the prestige of being accepted is something to consider, but living paycheck to paycheck makes it tough to pay, especially when I won't have much of an income over the next few months.

I would be interested to have some feedback in terms of how artists view mnartists.org in relationship to the issues of "economic realities".

Information from the community can help inform how the budget is allocated. Currently the budget breaks out with a percentage for marketing, percentage for paying writers fee's for the commissioned articles, percentage for support staff, percentage for special programs (such as the RFP we recently did or the CD project), percentage for New Media support, and that's about it.

Let me know thoughts/ideas/suggestions.
thanks,
Kathleen

New Media support??
Sorry to get off topic (Dunn Bros) but I notice a new thing in the artists galleries. At first I thought it was just one artist, but now I notice we all have RSS FEEDS. May I know what that is?

I LOVE the cd project. What ever happened to the "Innovate" project?? You know I'll be kinda disappointed if I don't see these "audio profiles" some time soon..

Oh, 1 more, Who are the support staff, and what do they do?

Marketing/writers and SP are self explanatory.

Hi Ray,
"New Media Support" is the department at the Walker that developed the site and maintains it, including adding enhancements (like the RSS feeds and the site redesign etc.)Basically all the "back-end" IT that we need to keep the site going.

Here's info from the New Media director, Robin Dowden, on the RSS (we'll get a help article up asap)

"What this means is that people who use news aggregators to manage web information can now add mnartists feeds
to the list of sites that they track. I can get the latest articles from mnartists, track an artist and be notified when they upload new work, and so on in my own news center. And, if the feed includes audio as in the state fair music collection, you can subscribe to the feed in iTunes or another
Podcast receiver, download and listen to the tunes there.

Confused? There's good information on the Walker site. Also, check out
help in bloglines.com (it's the service I use and like)."

Ray, I'm glad you liked the CD project...I do too. The RFP winner is Marya Morstad, host of KFAI "Art Matters" and we're launching that project Friday, Sept. 16--Marya will have me on her show to talk about this and we'll post the first interviews that day too. It should be good.

Paid staff includes me (Project Director), Colin Rusch, community manager, Ann Klefsta, site editor, and Will Goldstien, technical support (he answers member email questions/tech questions and posts news/events).

Wonderful. Thanks for the information.
I advocated for the RSS feeds a long while back and I glad to see they are being implemented. It opens up a lot of possibility to see the content in new ways. I like to use 3d world news screensaver (http://www.3dwonders.com/) for RSS.

So, back to the budget. Would you be at liberty to discuss the total and allocated percentages?
Do you have a jpeg of the pie graph handy?

How is it that this is a good thing? Create a great work of art, then give it away to a corporation to do with what they like? This is not in the best interest of the artist, but the company. They get your hard work without having to negotiate a fair price for using it to promote their business?

Thanks, but Dunn Bros. can do it on their own...

Cory

My, how selfish we can be! Any public display of my work by whomever is greatly appreciated.

Yours Sincerely,
