Speaking of trying to make money... just got my acceptance to the new "Bridging the Arts" (the new Taste of MN art fair). Being their first year, the booth fee was about half of the Uptown Art Fair so I thought, "what the hell?" I haven't done a fair in years, though I actually found them quite enjoyable, if unprofitable. Now I have to try to organize a booth that will fit my rather large pieces. I am approaching it as a chance for some advertising, meet new people and increase my guestbook. Don't really expect to sell anything but you never know.

Congrats, Sam!

Fairs/Fests don't always generate sales on site (esp. for large pieces), but with the right strategy many customers will make purchases later. Don't forget to have a book for people to sign as a "mailing list" so you can follow up with them - maybe with a personal invitation to "Mist Point". Be able to give them some kind of print material with photographs of your work and contact information so they remember you.

I'm sure you are well versed in all this stuff, but I just thought I'd write it here anyway. Make sure to let me know if you need anything (signs, banners, brochures, business cards, etc.) I would be honored to help out.

Sam; There is another non Uptown fair called Powderhorn Art Fair. I have been a judge in the past. Sculpture has done well, especially carriable and lawn related pieces. There is one booth that does iron rod and farm iron animals that does real well. Not that you should do so, but go for it buddy.

Darn! You just missed the deadline for the first ever Northside Arts Collective Spring Art Party. It was April 1st. I didn't know you were into outdoor art fairs. I should have put the word out a little more.

What did I do today? I woke up at 6:30am after 4 hours of sleep. And I rode my bike south thru the City in the 27 degree light snow and air. (April 4th!)
I made it to the "Indina Health Board" and their free Dental clinic for an Indian walk-in. But I was to late. They only take the first 5 people. Whoe is me. So I rode back thru the City observing office workers and fellow Minneapolitains starting the day. I rode by the residential towers at Marquette and 1st to see the work they are doing on the "Roof Top Garden". It was leaking into the parking garage so they tore it up to rebuild. I observed that it was a street level rooftop on an underground parking garage.. still of interest... But everything was gone already. No salvageable plants.
Now (after a nap) it's friday night and I'm ready to try with a little help from my friends. If ya know what I'm talking about.

I'm eating potato chips for breakfast because they're leftover from the party.

Then I'll go to rehearsal. Then I'll sleep. Then I'll perform my one-woman improv as part of Improv-A-Go-Go ( http://fivemanjob.com/index2.html ) Talk about artists making money, I'll probably make $2.00 whoo hooo!

Lauren, you should get Deepak Chopra's book " Creating Affluence". Lots of good stuff there.

Jaime, I've been all about the making of money here, just watching and listening.

Ray's napping in the afternoon, Jill's sleeping so she's up for the evening... I gotta get out of this 40 hour thing and get a real life again!

I have a new guitar, I could play the blues?

Naww, I don't think so!

Maybe the money is hiding there somewhere?

Go out and re-create the same old shtick that worked in 1980? Clint Eastwood seems to be able to pull it off.

How did you know? But technical "Today" is friday now. What am I doing? Meeting David Pitman at the Soap Factory about a possible studio residency! WHOOHOOO! Dreams coming true time! And I have invited the Paparazzi. Stephen and Lauren are going to be there for the photogenic atmosphere. Should be a great day. Maybe crash the Nemaa Spring Fine Arts event at Callhoune Square (Lake and Hennipen) later tonight! Hey that reminds me to post that information. I didn't see anything from Joe Holladay or any other nemaa people. So leave it to me. EVERYONE GO CELEBRATE the:
1. Arts Action Plan
&
2. Northeast Arts District

And do this in south Minneapolis at Calhone Square! TONIGHT! If Stephen, Laureen, and I make it there, we'll spy on ya!

Geeez! I wish I was there. My wife Patty and her girlfriend took all the boys to Breezy Point for the whole damn week!

I'm home by myself for the first time. HA..HAHA....kinda wierd.

I'll have to start by cleaning this place up.

Today I am sitting in a coffee shop trying to get a sense of all of the conversations that have taken place over the last couple of weeks in the forums. It looks like good stuff to me. I still need to weigh in on the Lux Lumen business. April Fools Day is one of my favorite holidays. At first blush, it looks like a plea for attention as much as a clever way to engage with the community. Tonight, I have the second of three performances at Links Hall in Chicago. Last night was nice. It was a small, but enthusiastic crowd.

Today I managed to finish a new sculpture. A nice day for it too. At the beginning, I thought it was going to be a great piece. Half-way through I wanted to scrap the whole deal. Now that I see it finished, it has managed to climb back up to near my initial expectations.

Right now, I am watching Trading Spaces with my wife. Don't ask me why. Probably has to do with marital harmony or something like that.

Hey Colin, do you guys have some technology that lets you read the deleted Lux posts? Without them, I don't know how much sense you will make of it all. Good luck anyway.

Go Colin! Good luck with the rest of the performances.

Congrats to Sam - I can't wait for you to post a pic of your newly finished sculpture.

In Lauren-News, this has been an amazingly difficult week (personally, professionally, academically) by the time Thursday rolled around, things were beyond crazy, but now everything has subsided. My apologies to Ray and Stephen for not seeing you at the Soap Factory on Fri.

I woke up early today, made a graphic design piece (a "night of free babysitting" card to give to Matt's sister). It seems like the only time I ever get to use fun typefaces is when I do stuff for friends and family, ah well. I finished editing my dad's wedding video. I did a lot of homework, and I hung out with my kickin' sister who re-dyed her hair this fantastic teal green color.

Then I hung out here, with all you fabulous people... and now I'm procrastinating sleep...

Dear Colin,

Hi. I am new to the site. I am part of a writer's group that recently.....hasn't been doing much writing. I'm on a one week vaction from my secret identity of school teacher so I am hoping to get a lot of writing done today. I plan to visit some galleries, read some Andrew Vachs ( to get me in the mood) , and perhaps work on my art car. I hope to make it over to Northern Sun to get 100's moe bumper stickers. Anyone know a good (cheap) airbrusher? I need help on my car. Anyway, that's my 3 day forecast. I also like to hang out at Open Book a lot. It's one of my top ten places in the universe. Peace!
