WEEKEND VISITING ARTISTS including Cat Whipple, Andrea Carlson, and Doug Limon.
The Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI)
celebrates the grand opening of its new All My Relations Gallery with an exhibit of never-before-seen paintings by master artist Frank Big Bear.
Frank Big Bear Paintings--From the Rez, to the Hood, to the Lake, presents vivid canvasses by Frank Big Bear, recipient of the Bush Foundation Enduring Visions Award, among other honors. Never-before-seen acrylic paintings, created by this Ojibwe artist best known for his surreal and detailed color pencil drawings, make their debut with this exhibit. EXTENDED to March 27, 2011, Frank Big Bear Paintings: From the Rez, to the Hood, to the Lake offers audiences a rare opportunity to witness an important artist's first works in a new medium.
Frank Big Bear Paintings continues Big Bear's use of layered images and shapes in his signature mosaic style, but they do so on large canvasses that expand his vision to startling effect and new depth---Heid Erdrich, Curator.
Frank Big Bear Paintings marks the grand opening of the new All My
Relations Gallery located in the heart of the American Indian Cultural corridor, the very neighborhood where Frank Big Bear lived while creating his prolific body of important early work. The gallery was developed by NACDI and will be located in the former Open Arms building on Franklin Avenue. A capital grant from the McKnight Foundation supported renovation of the building to house offices, the new POW WOW GROUNDS coffee shop, and the new All My Relations Gallery.
Frank Big Bear Paintings is made possible through support of the McKnight Foundation, Target, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Compas/Medtronic, Rosemary H. & David F. Good Family Foundation and in cooperation with Bockley Gallery.
All My Relations Arts is a ten-year old arts program that, until 2010, presented exhibits of contemporary American Indian fine arts at Ancient Traders Gallery in Minneapolis. In 2010, All My Relations Arts became an initiative of NACDI.
