Visual Arts Minnesota will be hosting a 3-day workshop event for visual artists from throughout Minnesota: FYi Professional Development Weekend. The workshop will take place October 4, 5 & 6, 2012 at the Great River Regional Library. The workshop is for artists to learn more about art within community, art exhibition and presentation from some of Minnesota’s most notable arts individuals, institutions, galleries and organizations. This is an opportunity for artists to meet other artists, as well as meet arts professionals who have knowledge to share in the world of visual art and professional development. This is a great opportunity for artists of all abilities and career goals!

The workshop will include speakers from Alliance of Artist Communities, Forecast Public Art, Plains Art Museum, Springboard for the Arts, Art-o-Mat and Perpich Center for Arts Education. There will also be elements of discussion that will include non-artist types, like city workers, community leaders and community members. There are also activities for the participants at various locations outside of the workshop, like a visit to JD Jorgenson Pottery in St. Joseph. A full list is online.

This program is meant to help artists understand the many steps involved in a successful career in the arts. When Visual Arts Minnesota went through a series of strategy sessions, with funding from the Initiative Foundation, it became evident that many artists from greater Minnesota would find great value in a “one stop shop” for artist opportunities as these institutions offer. Executive Director, Heidi Steadman, points out, “By putting a face to the program, fellowship or institution, many artists will see that there are more opportunities for them than they originally thought.” Each discussion, presentation and panel will have the purpose to expand the artist’s understanding of an art career. Presenter biographies are found online.

Registrations are encouraged, for space is limited, and a $50 donation is suggested. The calendar is filled with casual gatherings and presentations. Lodging information is available online.
