Letting Go (from "Move a Mountain")

This song came to me as an acapella mantra while I was trying to extricate myself from a relationship in/with NYC. I was fortunate to hook up with musicians in MPLS like Serge Akou, Pavel Janey and Estaire Godinez, who helped me arrange and record it. Considering the song is a sad expansion on the title, "Letting Go", it was tragically ironic that the morning of my birthday, when I was scheduled to record the song, I received a phone call informing me that my good friend, Lorenzo had died. I'd seen him on his own birthday a few nights earlier, so it was especially jarring. Getting ready for the studio session, I crashed into the glass doors of my shower and onto the hard tile floor, stunned and pained and grieving. I entered the studio, still dazed, and we recorded the tune. I remember feeling absorbed by the instrumentation as we recorded that day, like it was a sanctuary. Mistress Music is my salvation. "I go from laughin to cryin in minutes as the hours go by like years. I launch another piece of my soul, like a rocket, on every single tear. I cling to the corner of my room. I sing a Nina Simone tune. Every night you'll find me, howlin at that old moon...drinkin to forget, smokin cigarettes, cryin in a crowd, sobbing right out loud. I'm letting go. And if the rain don't kill me, the cold will, as the wind unrelenting, blows on. They say home is where the heart is, well if it is, then I'm a long, long way from home. I'm letting go. My heart has grown black as coal and it's hard too. Breakin off in little chunks of dust, I don't know who to trust."
It slowly evolved into an actual group over several years by adding the musicianship of Dave Onnen (Ousia, Skye Klad, Salamander) and Matt Zaun (Blitzen, Skye Klad, Salamander) and Mike Croswell (Metaphor).Di Dollari's instrumental sound combines elements of Americana, jazz, soundtrack, surf, and western sounds. Di Dollari is influenced by guitar-based music with a dusty edge such as the Ennio Morricone western compositions but also is influenced by the ambient, space rock, and post-punk histories of its members.Over the years Di Dollari has played a number of live shows at notable Twin Cities venues and the greater Midwest. The group was a regular feature in the avant-garde Future Perfect series and performed closing nights at both Sursumcorda and Duluth's Norshore Theater.

audio: North Star MP3
