Printing Vinyl:Breaking Recods
These prints are about direct printing from a matrix (monotype) using the intaglio process. Your response to Printing Vinyl: Broken Records will be based on using either 45rpm or 33rpm that are broken from the whole into parts and glued to mat board into a new whole. Don't confuse the hole of the 78 rpm, 45rpm, or the hole in the 33rpm vinyl with the semblance of a whole that Lawrence Weiner considered in his conceptual text artwork displayed on the Hennepin Ave. facade of Barnes Building of The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Those holes were utilized to center the spinning vinyl in order to guide a needle to pick up the audio recorded by a stylus in the grooves in the vinyl.
Confused? Well, when the technology of recording audio had two sides and moved at a slow 45rpm instead of 78rpm you know you are in the 1960's. The LP (long play) at 33rpm came into played at the same time until 8 track tapes began to faze out vinyl beginning slowly in the middle 1960's.
Your artwork will consider the conceptual aspects that are the strands that twine together and throughout this printmaking course, while considering color as a manner of expression. Already introduced to warm and cool qualities of hue, use a dominant color temperature with opposite accents...warm with cool accepts or cool with warm accents. Something like the two-tone color scheme of the late 1950's when rock beats emerged from the African rythum of soul.
