Curator's Statement

"Images from the Material World: Minnesota State Fair; St. Paul, Minnesota"
Ellen's images vibrate with sensation. In her photographs I feel that she has depicted portals into alternate realities -- places where our time-space continuum suffers a fracture.

Ellen says:
"Since I was young, there has been something exciting for me in the transient, shadowy nature of the fair, something a bit illicit and always fascinating. I have found it to be a place of strange sights and signs, a place to perhaps catch a glimpse of what is not supposed to be seen."

"Thousands of us make a pilgrimage to the State Fair each year to partake of the pleasures of the Midway and its environs. The eagerness with which we surrender ourselves to the sensory overload of light, color, sound, and motion that we find there speaks to the need we have as humans to shift our perception of reality; to be stimulated and mesmerized through our senses in order to apprehend our surroundings in an altered state, possibly in the hope of seeing what Carlos Castenada calls a 'non-ordinary reality'."
