Episode 243, Some Assembly Required...
SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED highlighted episodes for November/December
We spoke with three very different artists over the past few weeks, here on Some Assembly Required. First was our long awaited interview with legendary, underground cut-up artist, Wayne Butane, featured in Episode 243. Then came our 2007 studio interview with Minnesota artist (and KFAI DJ) Greg Carr, presented as part of Episode 154. Finally, just one week later, our very recent phone conversation with electronic musician and composer, Matt Wand, of famed UK improv group, Stock, Hausen & Walkman, was featured in Episode 245. Three very different approaches to the art of sound collage, presented practically one after the other, here on Some Assembly Required...
Wayne Butane gave us an extremely rare look into the origins of his often raunchy, usually hilarious work as a cut and paste artist, in Episode 243. He's been mastering the art of the linear edit for over fifteen years, and we finally scored a long sought after phone interview with him just a couple of months ago. He says it's the first feature length interview he's ever given, and it's definitely worth checking out, in Episode 243, HERE.
Greg Carr is well known as one of KFAI's current roster of morning show DJs ("Dig Up The Roots", Tuesdays, 9-11am), but his first program ("Technological Retreat", 1985-1989) at the Minneapolis community radio station was a freeform, improvised performance show, relying heavily on sounds appropriated from the media. Innova Records worked with Carr to compile a collection of some of his best recordings from the show, in 2005, and we interviewed him around the same time, about his work with the program. Check out Episode 154 HERE, for our conversation with the host of the Twin Cities' first sound collage radio show.
Stock, Hausen & Walkman was an improvisational performance group based in the UK, founded in the late 1980's by Matt Wand and Rex Casswell. Wand spoke with us at length about the group's genesis and evolution, and even shared some of his thoughts on the state of experimental music today. Check out our 2009 interview with Stock, Hausen & Walkman's Matt Wand in Episode 245, HERE.
Our Q&A's over the past several weeks were with artists such as Eddie Def, Stock, Hausen & Walkman, The Kleptones and none other than Ruth Anderson. Her collage work on pieces such as "SUM (State of the Union Message)", and "DUMP" (both composed in the early 1970's), have been very influential to more than just a few of the artists featured on Some Assembly Required over the years... Check out the SAR Blog for over 150 of these online features with sound collage artists from around the world, and check out the SAR Interview Page for links to past radio interviews with sound collage artists from a wide variety of backgrounds, ALL of which are now available to listen to online.
