A Serious Problem: 1+1=1
Still Life: P-5b.1o (water), Giselle Restrepo
I am instantly drawn to objects and images that many people pass by-- not because they are unique in any way; they are ordinary objects in ordinary situations-- but because they possess a certain quality of shape or color. In photographing these objects, I project an importance on them, and create pieces of a puzzle for me to solve.
Though I present relationships between images through mostly formal issues, I attempt to create pieces that are complete as diptychs. It is my hope that these will evoke both a visceral reaction and an underlying subconscious understanding from viewers.
Each diptych is a juxtaposition of two photographs taken in different locations, at different times, that relate to each other through formal issues of color theory and composition. These photographs, often of abstracted every-day objects, create a series of “urban still lifes.”
