Fearless

I did this in July, 2011, 2 months after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I wrote "Fearless" across my chest, when in reality, I was feeling anything but. After 4 surgeries and 16 rounds of chemotherapy, I am starting 7 weeks of radiation everyday. I put up a brave front, but am still feeling anything but fearless.

The Tolls of Violence

So many themes are touched upon in this piece that it is hard to know where to begin... Primarily, it is a response to the increasing proliferation of violence in our society. The violent murder of Demond Reed in Minneapolis struck me deeply last February. I spent many weeks thinking of ways to pay homage to Demond and all children who are victims of violence so that they will never be forgotten. I imagined Angels angry as they come to bring him home, incensed at this senseless tragedy. The glass containers represent our emotions are they are reduced and contained in vessels as our bodies eventually will be when returned to the earth: Fire represents violence, anger and war Dirt represents our bodies...ashes to ashes Grey represents despair Red (below the child's wrist) represents blood Pink (below the child’s heart) represents Love Blue (below the angel’s heart) represents sorrow Black represents death and our dependency on oil White signifies redemption and hope I wonder what legacy we will leave behind. Her Armor

I started thinking about St. Mary, seeing her as mother and soldier. She would have this incredible, regal, warrior exterior, but still be very vunerable. A hole in her armor, so to speak, would be her son. You could get to her heart very easily. A blessing to have bore him...tremendous loss to not be able to protect him. Does this make sense? I think this is one of my most powerful paintings to date.

The Joy of Letting Hummingbirds Go

This painting was based on an experience I had holding a live hummingbird. So incredible and light, it was like holding a piece of paper in my hands with a beating heart! I am raffling this painting as a fund raiser for my friend, Elizabeth, who had all of her tools stolen. She is a carpenter, so her livelihood depends on her tools.

When Angels Learned

This is a break through work for me, incorporating torn paper with oil paint. In the borders are names of people who have died from AIDS. In some cases, friends and family also wrote about them and their lives. My friend, Diane, wrote this: VB,Thank you for doing this. I buried my brother June 4, 1987 in Houston, Tx. The AIDS quilt was created shortly after his death and was in Houston but sadly, I was in no shape to create a block for it. This was the time when AIDS was a gay disease and uncertain still was the question if you could "catch it" from someone who was infected. I visited my brother, Damon, at the AIDS hospital and sadly I saw many die isolated, abandoned and heartbroke. My tribute is to my brother and all those men who died without a hand to hold. diane I will be donating a print of this to the Minneapolis HRC Gala in September, 2007.
