Console Emulation Station

Console Emulation Station is a continuation of the ideas spawned from the Arcade Console game archival project. However, instead of focusing on arcade games, Console Emulation Station focuses strictly on console and handheld gaming. The result is a lush archive of console gaming's past with an authentic look and feel true to console gaming's roots, so that future generations may experience and enjoy these games.Console Emulation Station uses a hacked Macintosh G4 with TV output and custom built frontend software for selecting systems and games to play. All input for the entire device is done through a standard Playstation controller. Shoulder buttons on the controller cycle through systems, and the control pad selects the appropriate game to play. Every system is mapped accordingly to the control pad.The unit contains 15 different systems to choose from, including: Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari Lynx, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Game Gear, TurboGrafx-16, Vectrex, and Virtual Boy. Approximately 7000 games are playable across these systems by means of emulation.
Yet over the course of the last 20 years, many of these works have been lost to destruction, decay, or simply forgotten altogether. While techniques for restoring and archiving paintings or film have existed for decades, proper archiving of video games is a relatively recent endeavor and one that is strictly underground, seemingly unimportant to the public eye or the art world in general.Arcade Console is a project commissioned by Carleton College in November of 2003 for the exhibition State of the Art: Maps, Stories, Games and Algorithms from Minnesota, curated by Steve Dietz. The piece is a custom-built arcade cabinet created to mimic the look, feel and experience of a real arcade machine and includes virtually every arcade game ever created. It is at its core an archival project, one that allows the user to look back at a history of gaming they may never have otherwise been allowed to, with an experience that is true to arcade gaming's roots.
