Carved Branch Cabinet - Hanging Style

This wall-hanging piece is made from thin plywood bent into a circular form. It features hand-carved birch wood made to look like a branch. The "branches" are doweled together, carved, and then burnt to resemble a live tree branch. The design of the branch is based on the laws of Ikebana - Japanese flower arranging - to determine the shape and lengths of each stem. Burnt Plywood, Hand-carved Birch 24" x 26" x 4" 2011 $1800

The "branch" in this piece is made from birch wood joined and carved into a tree-like form. It is captured inside of a cabinet made from reclaimed walnut. The carving is also burnt in detailed areas to achieve a dimensional finish. The cabinet is made to function in that it can hold a few small objects, things that are beautiful, and special for you. Just as well it is a beautiful sculpture to hang on the wall. This cabinet is mounted using keyhole fasteners which are in the back of the piece that sit on two screws in the wall. Kurumi-Kozo

A small wall hanging cabinet made from walnut wood. Underneath the wooden box hangs a metal structure which is wrapped in kozo, a fiber used in making Japanese paper. In papermaking, the fiber is beaten down into a pulp and mixed with water. I skipped the beating step and used the raw material to wrap the steel, turing into a tight, drum-like surface.
