SERIES STATEMENT [/b]

I completed a set of thirty two by two feet mixed media paintings on wood panel that can be installed in a flexible modular fashion according to the curatorial needs of a space. These works on panel are part of my new series is titled “Trains and other Transport” - concerning travel, exploration, experience and memory.

shelter series

SHELTER series. mixed media [4 by 4 feet] works on wood panel, completed in 2004 Vulture: Ambivalent as maternal solicitude, protection and shelter, and as death-dealing destruction and voracity. All vultures were thought to be female and symbolized the feminine principle with the hawk as male; they were said to combine 'the age of China, the sorcery of Egypt and the cunning of Arabia'. As a scavenger the vulture represented purification, a worker for good. In Egypt it represented the Mother Goddess, maternity and love, Isis having assumed the form of a vulture; it is purification and good works. Hathor is sometimes vulture-headed, and the bird is also associated with Mut, as an ideogram of her name, and she wears a vulture headdress, with Neith and Nekhebet. In Graeco-Roman mythology it is a sacred to Apollo and is the steed of Cronos/Saturn. -An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Symbols by J.C. Cooper These works on wood panel explore the notions of home, maternity and security. The use of the vulture image as a symbol reflects its historical past and its present, personal meaning. I use the repeated vulture character as a means to make sense of my new role as a Mother, a protector, a provider. The work catalogs the surprise and mystery involved with the most powerful life changing event that is possible. These paintings chronicle love, loss, gain and the interior. It charts my experience, my process and the greatest mystery.

bridge series

bridge series. created in 2006, mixed media on wood panel. 2 by 4 feet. This series of paintings were inspired by the exploration of the subject of forgiveness and reconciliation. Using familiar "forgiveness" symbols such as bridges, birds, and branches as a starting point - the visual translation turned to organic shapes and communication with color. Utilizing the "postcard" format/proportion as another means to convey the idea of communication and correspondence, the pieces contain lines... often divided up the space as well as the communication. The approach to the work is free, intuitive and not bound by particular rules, regulations or boundaries just as forgiveness, when authentic, is a rare and unbounded miracle.

Memory/ Mixed media works "...if art speaks clearly about something relevant to people's lives it can change the way they perceive reality." American artist Judy Chicago said in an interview with Betsey Beaven in 1980. My mixed media drawings and paintings explore the smaller spaces in life, perhaps these are spaces more "relevant" to people's lives. My works may inspire the viewer to examine their own life more closely. An important theme in this work in memory. What does a memory look like? What kind of space does it occupy in everyday life? What happens as time passes... does the imagery (memory) change or blend itself with others? Combining found objects, collage, original and reproduced sketches, I investigate the smaller spaces in life and their relation to memory.

Climate, Color + Social Space

Climate influences all of us, everyday. It determines what kind of housing we live in (light wood structure or sturdy brick), what types of clothing are needed (one layer or three), and what types of transportation are ideal (walking on a sidewalk or using a covered car or bus). Climate and its character reach far into our daily lives. This body of work explores how climate influences color usage in the public, urban arena, and how that usage, in turn, affects human response which encourages a certain amount of social space. The surrounding "color environment" may play a part in the surrounding social environment. This work visually explores the two different urban areas. Miami, Florida, United Sates, and Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. These areas have very different climates, as well as very different usages of color in their public spaces. It seems further from the equator (Saint Paul), a more muted color palette is used. Were as closer to the equator (Miami), a more intense, vibrant color palette is used. How might that affect the humans participating in that space? Might certain color choices encourage or discourage sociability? I used photography to first "capture" the color interactions of both areas. The place of contrast, mostly entails sidewalk areas outdoors, where color and social interactions are more apparent. Outdoor restaurants, cafés and other buildings were often the settings for these observations. The photographs were then made transparent and combined with other found color objects native of the area. Gestural line drawings, suggesting social space, or borders were added. Map segments, visually play on the idea of space and notions of "borders". These images were then transferred on to architectural blocks, playing on the idea of climate, space, light and border. The blocks were places in a square window, commenting on the idea of borders and the notion of "inside- outside". The work looks closer at these intricate relationships related to climate in an effort to help us examine our own influences.

Design Paintings

This new group of paintings focuses on the figure. The figures relationship to a particular design lifestyle. What place do we have in the design world? What is our aesthetic interaction with space? The work is mixed, or "cross" media. Photography, paint, ink, graphite, found objects comment on the interdisciplinary nature of our globalizing (design) world. Medias and disciplines are explored and blended. A handbag design could be compared to that of a sculpture. A web site to a painting. But how do various medias related to each other in the format of a painting? The paintings ask questions, examine relationships between people, objects and experience. Our desires, our ideals, our aesthetics are expressed in our designs. What we want to be surrounded by, seen in, and seen with. The color choices are clean, clear, vibrant and crisp. Some are color "fields", hinting to computer programs utilized in graphic design. Technology has created new medias and applications which can be incorporated into exciting new ways in the visual arts.

Florida paintings

Florida Paintings/Works on Paper and Canvas This body of work was completed during the summer of 2002. Many of the images, colors and forms are informed by my experience in a new area, the rural South. Investigating new surroundings. Images used are informed by regional culture and tradition. Boiled peanuts, for example, are not a food fare one in the North usually partakes in. In the South, they are a delicious treat. These sort of new "findings" are recorded in the work.
