http://www.mnartists.org/artistHome.do?rid=284784 Artist http://www.mnartists.org/work.do?rid=325596 <p class="p1">This body of paintings is an expression of the interaction of the body and mind in the midst of experiencing a chronic illness. The paintings explore the ways in which physical aliment connects both emotional and mental space for those living with a long-term illness. I use abstraction to tap into the psychological dynamics associated with the body, specifically a body affected by epilepsy. Because someone with a life-long illness must constantly face the unknown, abstraction offers an effective means of conveying the mystery and power of the unknown. <p class="p1">Space plays an important role in my work, and by incorporating drips, solid blocks of flat color, and splatters I attempt to investigate the spaces in the body that are invaded on many different levels. In these paintings, color implies emotive as well as meditative relationships between the forms, forcing the viewer to relate the work to the body. The organism-like shapes in these works speak to the process of epilepsy and the way it is expressed biologically and takes over the body.
