Hopefully, this work will find a home somewhere as a large-scale installation. The work includes an interactive Flash animation projection that is controlled by an Arduino board mounted inside of a rocking sculptural form with four pushbuttons attached to it. When you stand on and rock the sculpture, you control a drawing object in the Flash animation projection, adjusting its position by leaning left, right, forward or back. When you direct a drawing to hit a boundary of the screen, a new one randomly replaces the previous one. Each drawing object has its own unique sound.
While making gallery visitors aware of the natural beauty in the local environment around them, it also invites them to become participants in the work by arranging their own compositions of plants and animals, and outputting favorites as postcard prints. They "play" the interface by clicking and dragging sliders to generate random patterns of flora and fauna from a set of arrays that include vector illustrations I created. The assorted flowers and birds that are generated can then be positioned and removed. Results can range from very representational to wildly abstract depending upon numbers selected and pure chance. Individuals are invited to output postcard-sized prints of their creations as a keepsake. This work is site-specific, and yet it is programmed using modular code so animals and plants from other ecosystems could easily replace the current ones. New sets of illustrations will give each interface a unique aesthetic and customized content to inform viewers of other unique places on earth and the flora and fauna that inhabit them. At present, a new version of this work is being considered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for a touch screen kiosk at a naturalist station in the State Park system. You can interact with this work at: http://www.billgorcica.com/ff/ff.htm
