This sculpture uses a crankworks that drives rods in a vertical motion, this simple movement in turn translates into sweeping curved overlapping patterns in an almost airborne structure.

application: 8 Bands
I was struck by the sound that is produced when a wood hand saw is played musically, and decided to experiment sculpturally with the concept. My first attempt was a sculpture that used a simple gear works to turn motors on and off as way of programming the sounds that would occur when the sculpture is played. In my most recent sculpture, a programmable logic controller was used to control the striking of hammers on the bands of spring steel that conduct the sounds. These sculptures must make aesthetic concessions to the mechanical nature of motors and geometry, but at the same time, in the building of a pattern of moving elements and the flow of the sound from the sculpture, a transcendence of mechanics is taking place.

video: Sound Sculpture 2
This work used twenty individual structures that each had their own structure and sound. This piece is also unique in that it can be arranged in ways to suit different spaces.

application: Group of Twenty
The variations in the patterns of the sounds give viewer the feeling of an oncoming storm.

application: The Storm
