The portraits were sculpted in clay from life, molded in rubber, and then cast in concrete. A total of fifty portraits in all were completed for the project. The portraits were executed at my studio in north east Minneapolis in two hour sittings. Ten of the portraits were done from photographs. Working in an impressionistic style the clay faces were then applied to flat rock shapes that fit into the cast rock facade of the bridge abutment. The enhancements were the initiative of the Central Neighborhood Improvement Assoc., Honeywell, and the People of Phillips. The site is located in south Minneapolis between E. Lake St. and 28th St. at 4th Ave. The face castings are placed upon the underside of the bridge on the north abutment. The bridge crosses over the future Midtown Greenway (29th St. Railroad corridor) which will soon have bicycle and walking paths connecting the Mississippi River with the Chain of Lakes.
The sculpture is representational with contemporary styling. It depicts Mary at the moment of the Annunciation. She is portrayed as an active participant in the events unfolding before her, a woman who is assertive and moving forward. Through the gesture of her hands she is both internalizing the responsibility of the Incarnation and engaging the viewer. The sculpture stands in front of the main entrance of the church and was scaled for the site.
