Matt Zaun and Sean Connaughty Winter 2006/7
Bigloo Version 5 and 6,
In the Winter of 2006/2007 Matt Zaun and Sean Connaughty built this igloo and a thermal igloo cover as part of the Art Shanty Projects on Medicine Lake in Minnesota. Loosely based on traditional inuit snow structures, the shelters were designed as environments for recording and playing back music. Musicians and non-musicians alike got together in this intimate, unique environment and played various cold weather instruments. Bigloo project continues in 2009/2010 despite the death of Bigloo partner Matt Zaun in November 2007

In the Winter of 2005/2006 Matt Zaun and Sean Connaughty built three igloos and an ice amphitheatre. (It was part of the Art Shanty Projects sponsored by the Soap Factory with support from the McKnight Foundation.) Loosely based on traditional inuit snow structures, Zaun and Connaughty designed the igloos as environments for recording and playing back music.
Musicians and non-musicians alike got together in this intimate, unique environment and played various cold weather instruments. This CD contains the recorded music from those 'sessions'.

It contains the recorded music from the Bigloo in all its glory.

"Minnesota's lakes get redefined during the winter months. One good cold snap can turn a glimmering, lapping lake into an icy tundra or -- as 60 or so artists dressed in multiple layers saw it -- a subzero gallery space.
On the frozen flats of Medicine Lake, seated just west of Minneapolis, contributors to the third annual Art Shanty Project assembled their homespun creations last Saturday.
Artists took design cues from the boxy blueprints of ice fishing houses -- little huts seen speckling iced-over lakes in the upper-Midwest. Most times, these fish houses are just big enough to hold a propane heater, some tackle and a couple of fishermen who sink their lines through a trapdoor that sits above a hole in the ice.
The idea to take the fish house from functional to fabulous sprung from the mind and passion of local artist Peter Haakon Thompson, who grew up near the lake. It started small with just Peter and his friends. Now the event beckons school kids and innocent bystanders, all building their dream houses on the ice.
Some people spend weeks planning and building their projects. After the shacks are assembled, the shanties stay up for five weeks. Some of the hardiest of builders stay in their constructions overnight.
While there's more avant-garde horseplay than actual fishing (attendees were treated to a performance titled "Zombies on Ice") the inspiration for these temporary shelters stayed in focus. Most builders stayed true to fish house roots by incorporating plywood and two-by-fours, but some bucked conventions entirely to fashion tarp tents and geodesic domes.
asap contributor Archie Ingersoll forgot to wear his long underwear to the Art Shanty Project outing. He won't forget next year."
"Ladies and gentlemen, may we present the Bigloo. Here Sean Connaughty preps a brick of snow with lake water as a mortar for this building. Collaborator Matt Zaun uses plastic tubs to mold the snow. And well wisher Ryan Murphy serves as the third cog in the works, hauling the white stuff from shore on a plastic sled. Their goal is to build an anechoic chamber, a space where echoes don't have a prayer. The master planincludes under-ice and above ice microphonesfor gleaning soundssounds of water sloshing , ice cracking and folks walking. Speakers inside the all snow reproduce the under-ice sounds. The Bigloo crew even invite some of their musician friends to come and record."
