This is a study of one of the paintings done for the "Tales of Genji" by the Tosa School of Japan in the late 15th century.
The painting shows Murasaki as a young girl lamenting the flying off of the baby sparrows.
Genji (not included in study) observes from behind fence.
Only part of the original has been copied for this study which is painted on Shikishi (poem card) board as was the original.
