The Shoebox Gallery is pleased to announce a solo show by Matthew Grover. A street-side opening reception will be held on Friday, September 29th from 6-8 p.m. Expect to see Mr. Grover a la a returning astronaut welcomed to the gallery by a twelve piece marching band.
Matthew Groverís work draws on the complex of artís bond to advertising. Throughout his work, the phenomenological experience of paintings, photographs, and sculptures are re-contextualized in nonnative and virtual formats, which further reference the immediacy of an artwork as a product of a specific medium and an object of consumer contemplation and commercial reproduction.
For this exhibition, the artist will present a collection of his photographic posters and painted records. Both the posters and painted records depict the effect of lens flaring. Each series of work was created offhandedly. The photographic posters were made by shining a flashlight directly at a camera in a dark room, and the records evolved from randomly layering coats of spray paint. Furthermore, these harsh productions and reproductions propose their relationship, if any, to content.
During the opening reception, images of the posters and records will be sold on CD-Rom for $20/image.
Grover received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in May 2006. He works in Saint Paul.

The Shoebox Gallery is located just to the right of 2948 Chicago Av S, Mpls, MN 55407 and is a window display (on the first floor of the Roberts Shoes building) constantly available for viewing. The show runs until Thanksgiving. For further information: www.mnartists.org/shoebox_gallery or 612.825.3833.
