Statement

One of a series. Through my looking glass. Art transformed and realism abstracted and recreated as a new form. As a metaphor for my reflections on and insights regarding Human perception, understanding and belief structures that form our temporal reality.

I am more than a one dimensional artist. I have always had broad interests in my creative studies and throughout my life. And as I am secure in my self I am going to show you as many facts of my personality, tastes and creative discoveries that I can. I don't submit to the idea that to be a successful artist one has to pick one style or technique and adhere to it as some sort of rule or LAW. That's the curators and art historians in us talking.

As an artist and creator I have always considered myself and explorer. I have to feel challenged and excited to be fully engaged in the process.
So, although it may appear that I jump around. It is simply my personality and spirit to go were ever I am driven by my thoughts and experiments. Never being afraid to look at an idea again or even try something completely new. That's how I grow and an artist and expand my understanding of self and the creative process.

Glass Blocks, these specific glass blocks have interested me since the 1980's. Here is a human construct a building material that shows us just how nature and light are bent and thus create an Abstracted view the world. And since light to me is one of the main interests as a painter especially regarding oils, they take have become to me a modern symbol of the ties between modern and traditional art. Since Abstract Expressionism itself intentionally created the great schism between artist, art and the common man. Placing art out of the reach and understanding of the uneducated Fine Art has lost it's mass appeal. Part of me has always wanted to find away to stay true to my self and still be able to once again find a way to communicate with a larger audience. A way without having to give up Abstraction. As one can always paint realism and realistic scenes that have mass appeal. To me that is the easy answer.

So, these glass blocks, though real and painting them and they way they bend light and abstract form still go well beyond traditional realism in there effect on the viewer. This construct also allows me to use any number of subjects as the underlying theme while maintaining the stylistic continuity.

It is my hope that by showing beautiful examples of Abstract Art that challenge and still aren't beyond the pedestrian understanding that I can help begin to bring a larger audience back to the fold of Modern Abstraction. rjk
