Sarah Hauss will premiere “Then Now Soon: A Dance I Found”. This work explores Sarah’s reflections on her past while immersed in her present life and raising her children. She has been thinking about Visual Found Art and the importance of recycling for the future. Her work explores what is the best way to “find” a dance? Perhaps recycling used parts to create something new.
Kelly Radermacher will present a dance and video work titled “Ruffled”. “Ruffled” is a dark work and is abstractly heavy with emotion. Kelly has been dancing and choreographing in the Twin Cities since graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003.
Wilderness (co-directors Amber Ellison and Jesse Walker, with dancers Laura Selle and Kimberly Richardson) presents work from their repertory including the light-hearted romance Peacock Feathers (“As smooth as chocolate pie.” -Dylan Skybrook), the media dream Channeling (“I really liked the beginning.” –Vanessa Voskuil), the reincarnation of our controversial attempt to transform into wild animals in Zoo Version 2 (“…like pouring salt in a wound…” -Murray Louis), and the Twin Cities premieres of Cry Out (“Holy cow!!!” -Catharine Campbell) and Budd’s Polka (“Wunnerful. Wunnerful.” –Lawrence Welk) Come see what the critical acclaim is really about!

But "Joy" Has Almonds
Imagine a converted 1950's movie theater with the seating rows ripped out to leave a large versatile bare space for folding chairs, table arrangements, whatever. Charming art-deco crap on the walls and tinsel stars hanging like snowflake ornaments over the entrance. A raised area in the back of the house with rug, sofas, refrigerator, and potted plants. Imagine further that they sell you popcorn and soft drinks.
Now do a quick parallel-universe-warp distortion of this picture and imagine that once a month this venue is a showcase for Twin Cities dance. Ladies and gentlemen, this is The Mounds Theater, in EastSt. Paul. (Now sneak a look, please, at the title of this post). The "house" and the audience experience are FANTASTIC. The stage is flawed but adequate and Impressario Goddess Sarah LaRose (bless the woman for launching this monthly enterprise) has managed to secure a Marley floor for these events. The backstage is, well, total suck-dom. But you can't have everything.
I was there tonight to see work by the married duo of Jesse Walker and Amber Ellison (company name "Wilderness" also featuring dancers Laura Selle and Kimberly Richardson). They did four works, all engaging and quite varied in tone. Both Jesse and Amber were in the Twin Cities a few years ago, went to Utah to get MFA's in dance, and now they're back like a cool breeze off a quiet lake in the woods. Also work by Sarah Hauss, who used to dance in my Third Rabbit Dance Ensemble and now has an MFA in dance and a couple of kids, not necessarily in that order. She was brief. A three and a half minute solo delivered with consummate skill and teasingly sophisticated nuances of rhythm. So many little changes and shifts and snaps and pops. Chiseled like a diamond being cut by busy but faultless elves.
Also work by Kelly Radermacher, a new voice on the choreographic scene who dances with the April Sellers Collective ("Tasteless" on last year's Fringe). Kelly has a patent on delivering a TOTALLY committed evocation of inner turmoil. She dances simultaneously with the projection of original video. She's the video-creater, too. So it's not a collaboration. Unless, of course, Kelly is profoundly schizo. Naaaaaah. She's not schizo.
Sarah and I talked afterward about pooling our resources since both our Fringe shows are at The Southern Theater. And we mentioned the idea of approaching everyone else who's at The Southern. Precedent exists. Some of us did some collaborative marketing a couple of Fringes ago when we were the brave souls who first performed at Heart Of The Beast Theater on Lake Street over in East Jesus or some such godforsaken farflung distant setting.
I can smell it now. Work. More work. More work coming on. Work communicating with and organizing dancers. I'd say "It's like herding cats," but that image is overused.
How about, "It's like trying to keep wind in a jar."
