Watercolor, late July 2007.
A watercolor mean to evoke an old photograph, but the colors ended up being too bright, which I figured looked all right. I wanted an excuse to draw the characters of a tentative project called "Soft Earth." Set in the late 22nd century, it follows the crew of a rundown scientific ship which traverses the Pacific, which massive quakes have turned from an ocean to an unpredictable shifting mass, home to billions of nomads, including Sho (little boy in the suit) and Tumei (in middle) a mysterious girl found in the middle of no-mans-land.
For the painting, I wanted them to look rundown, but dignified. The writing is a mix of Spanish and Chinese ideograms.
