Statement

Bela Petheo is listed in Who's Who in American
Art. In his book "Bela Petheo" (copywrite 1985),
art historian, J. Gray Sweeney, writes ... "the
history of American art will almost certainly rate
Bela Petheo as one of the finest artistic gifts to
this country from the totalitarianism from behind
the Iron Curtain. It may eventually come to regard
him as among the most significant artists who
entered this country from Europe after World
War II." pg.25, "Bela Petheo." J. Gray Sweeney,
1985. Bela Petheo (born in 1934 at Budapest
Hungary) studied at the University of Budapest
(MA in Art History, 1956), at the Academy of Fine
Arts in Vienna, Austria (1957-1959), and at the
University of Chicago (MFA in painting and
printmaking, 1963). He retired as a Professor
Emeritus of Art from St. John's University,
Collegeville, Minnesota, in 1997. Petheo is a
versatile, experienced painter in the tradition of
French impressionism, and a personal version of
German Expressionism with overtones of
European figurative tradition manifested
especially in his nudes. His favorite techniques
include oils, acrylics, and watercolors. In 1985,
the noted art historian J. Gray Sweeney, wrote a
100 page monograph of the artist, titled: Bela
Petheo, Painter of the Center in an Age of
Extremes, St. John's University, Collegeville, MN
56321. A standard reference to the artist's work
listing museum, corporate, and private
collections featuring Petheo's work. (Petheo also
wrote the definitive study on Oskar Kokoschka's
artistic activities in Minnesota, published in 1990).
The artist also gives lectures and conducts
workshops using his experiences from his
frequent trips to Italy, France, Greece, and
Mexico, working on location as an "alla prima"
painter.
