I started thinking about St. Mary, seeing her as mother and soldier. She would have this incredible, regal, warrior exterior, but still be very vunerable. A hole in her armor, so to speak, would be her son. You could get to her heart very easily. A blessing to have bore him...tremendous loss to not be able to protect him.
Does this make sense? I think this is one of my most powerful paintings to date.
