Statement

This sculpture honors Stella Wrobel Axell an incredible women and the grandmother of my children. At Ellis Island, they changed her beautiful name Stasha to the American name Stella. She emigrated to N.E.Minneapolis Minnesota from Poland at age five in 1914. She had a passion for speed skating as a teen and young adult. All of her free time she spent on the ice at Jackson Square N.E.Minnapolis. She met her Swedish husband there. She married in 1935 and they had four children. She graduated from Minneapolis
Public Schools in stenography. In 1926, she received a
cirtificate as a typist. She also when to school for the millinery arts. Throughout her life , she excelled in the clothing business. She suffered from diabetes and lost
both of her legs at age 89. She died at the age 90 Nov.10,99
I love looking at her skates and thinking about her fun
speeding on the ice.
