CeCe, who is in his forties, is from a family of thirteen. His hair is always braided and ornamented with beads like those included in his portrait.
The music for “Amazing Grace” and piano keys on the side of his face represent CeCe’s talent as a piano player and Gospel singer. He says music and spirituality are his salvation. The crack pipe fashioned from a car radio antenna (as many crack pipes are)—with a crosspiece added to turn it into a cross—symbolizes that his mother was an evangelical minister and that he feels great tension between his identity as a Gospel singer and Christian and a crack addict.
I included John Updike’s line “We contain chords someone else must strike,” because I felt it applied to CeCe. He says he does well when he feels cared about and loved.
