This research project documents 50 urban parking garages in four regions of the United States. The selected garages display powerful poetic qualities along with stark pragmatism and make positive contributions to the urban fabric in which they are sited. All documented car parks were built from 1950 to 1970, a period of time in American architecture in which structures were built using a minimum of means to maximum effect. Generously supported by the Graham Foundation, this research will appear in a four volume book series, the first of which will be published in 2010.
