Statement

Vision Serpent

In Maya cosmology, the vision serpent is the portal from the underworld (Xibalba) to our world through which the ancestors travel to communicate messages to those practising auto-sacrifice. A man or woman makes an offering of his or her blood on paper, which is then burned with incense in a bowl. From the smoke appears the vision serpent, bearing the ancestor in its mouth. The patterns of red circles are referred to as blood scrolls, a symbolic representation of blood.
