Apartment 51 Pottery began in 2005, founded by Brandon Hanna in Saint
Paul, Minnesota. It was always his dream to have his very own studio to
make whatever creations that he wanted, and most importantly make a
very big mess without authority presiding over ‘with a broom.’ Born
were new responsibilities, and those that weighed most heavily on him
were design, glaze colors, and keeping the pottery affordable. He loves
to experiment like a bench chemist would, with new glaze formulas and
see how they react in the kiln, but a greater love / hate relationship
beckons him on the pottery wheel where he strives to create unique
items and those that call to his inner self. Often, what he makes is
spur of the moment by taking a block of clay, pounding it into
position, and as the wheel swirls his fingers and hands operate as his
tools, deftly pushing the clay back-and-forth until it pleases him.
There are no rules that he follows, and exactness isn’t a
characteristic that defines him; when he needs a ruler to measure a lid
for a jar, he uses the length of his fingers as a frame of reference.
And so it continues to this day, he moves forward thinking how he could
do things better with his pottery, constantly trying to center himself
and gain recognition from his peers and customers that what he’s making
is appealing because it’s true, and the best he could do. Apartment 51
Pottery is located in the heart of the capitol city in the confines of
an apartment building as the name indicates. Open by appointment only,
visitors are welcome to tour the studio, purchase pieces, and order
custom items.
