The Birds (Bird in Space) is an audio installation consisting of a raven’s call set to play once every two to three minutes. The audio creates the existence of a theoretical bird within the space. The installation is titled after Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and Constantin Brâncuşi’s series Bird in Space, which serves as a literal interpretation of the work but also a throwback to ‘the bird’ as a historic symbol within art. Looking at Alfred Hitchcock’s use of audio within his film, he negates the use of musical scores to create an atmosphere; instead he exclusively utilizes the sound of birds. Within the film tension is built through our disconnected relationship to nature, and our inability to understand certain phenomena within it. I am interested in this aspect, and how subsequently animals can become signifiers for some kind of unforeseen change.
