Das Fundbuero is about the German Democratic Republic, the political changes of 1989-1990, history and identity. It does not seek to build a grand narrative, or a historical consensus, but rather to function as a space for the conflicting feelings that exist.
The Zentrale creates space for individuals to reflect on their experiences in East Germany and how these have shaped them. Visitors can record an interview or bring in objects to be photographed for the archive. Monthly events offer more chance for interaction and exchange between participants.
Public discussion of East Germany is often polarized into focusing on the crimes of the dictatorship or nostalgic reminiscence of popular culture. Das Fundbuero’s approach encourages critical reflection while leaving room for ambivalence and personal experience as well as inviting average citizens to have a voice in the telling of their own history.
