Statement

DEAD ASSETS is an art installation that connects our lives with the living, and gives death a place to rest in peace.
My twenty-two art pieces have led me on a conscious and subconscious four-year journey of pain, sadness, wonderment and enduring amazement of death. I have always been involved in looking at my family’s ancestry, but I also wanted the public to discover and become involved with their own family histories. While connecting with past generations, I discovered my most precious assets, the past.
My father died when I was only fifteen, I could not deal with the emotional pressures of death. When my mother and two brothers died in 2007, I realized I had not come to terms with my father’s death so long ago. In making my artworks, I found they were getting me through my grief and I began to accept the losses of all my family members.
When I felt safe enough to make art, my grief turned into shapes, colors, and names. Death gave me a great freedom, and I began to build images through my book ‘Dead Assets’, my window ‘Trees Among Us’, and my ‘Forest Blanket’. Death is bigger than my feelings and me. I understand all people have to confront it. We are not alone and I want to make connections with others through my visual dialogue. I want to connect, honor, and make these vague ancestors be known, before they are forgotten. Share them with the public, so they can remember and honor their ancestors. They came from faraway places in the world and deep in my soul. Healing and accepting death came easier through the creation of these works. I made a union of karma, past and present, in my ‘DEAD ASSETS’ Art Installation.
