2011/12 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists

Minneapolis-The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, in conjunction with the Jerome Foundation, is pleased to announce the five recipients of the 2011/12 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists. They are Richard Barlow, Lauren Herzak-Bauman, Alison Hiltner, and Jehra Patrick, of the Twin Cities, and Gregory Euclide, of Le Sueur, MN. In addition to receiving $10,000 stipends, over the course of the year these artists have the opportunity to meet with three arts professionals, enroll in one professional-development course, and have their work included in a culminating group exhibition that is accompanied by a catalog.

Since 1981, the Jerome Foundation has generously funded these fellowships for emerging artists, which are designed to identify and support outstanding artists in the state of Minnesota at the early stages of their professional careers. The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is proud to be the administrator of this fellowship program that has benefitted more than 150 artists over the past 30 years.

These newest Jerome fellows were selected out of a field of 236 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals. This year's jurors were Bruce Charlesworth, assistant professor of film, video, and new genres at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and one of the first five Jerome Fellowship recipients in 1981; Miki Garcia, executive director of Contemporary Arts Forum Santa Barbara; and Cherise Smith, associate professor of art history and African and African diaspora studies at the University of Texas, Austin.

Richard Barlow interrogates the "natural" in representations of the natural world. By appropriating existing landscape images-from 19th century photographs, album covers, and SUV advertisements-Barlow creates seductively beautiful paintings, drawings, and prints that call into question their own historical and cultural meanings. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Barlow received his MFA in painting from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in 2005. Among his many accomplishments, he has recently been awarded two Graffiti Prevention Mural grants through Clean City Minneapolis.

Gregory Euclide shares Barlow's fascination with our highly mediated experience of nature. Euclide's mixed-media sculptures and installations begin as traditional landscape paintings-watercolor on paper-but quickly become multi-dimensional topographies, where pools of raw paint mimic the properties of rivers and lakes, and remnants of the landscape-from cigarette buts and plastic shards to pine needles and bark-tenuously coexist. ta State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, Euclide earned his BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, and his MFA in 2008 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Lauren Herzak-Bauman draws upon properties unique to porcelain to make objects and temporal installations that explore mourning and loss. Her layered masses of broken and cracked handmade porcelain turn fragility and translucency into metaphors for the human condition. Herzak-Bauman received her BFA from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and her MFA in 2009 from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She currently teaches in the department of art at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.

Alison Hiltner marvels at the worlds that science seeks to explain. Using ordinary materials, she creates singular objects as well as complex environments that comically mimic many of life's most amazing features, from the cellular to the celestial. Hiltner received her BFA from the University of Kansas and her MFA in 2002 from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her work has been supported by several unique grants, a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant, and a Sculpture Space Residency in Utica, New York.

Jehra Patrick explores the contexts in which "art" is made "Art"-as an object worthy of collection and incorporation into prominent museum exhibitions-and reinterprets their archival record in large-scale paintings and photo-based works. By focusing on the behind-the-scenes installations and mundane details of art's promotion, Patrick questions conditions that bring certain artists, movements, and exhibitions into prominence. Patrick has a BFA from the College of Visual Arts, and she is currently the project coordinator for mnartists.org and the program assistant for the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers.
