Statement

This is a break through work for me, incorporating torn paper with oil paint. In the borders are names of people who have died from AIDS. In some cases, friends and family also wrote about them and their lives.

My friend, Diane, wrote this:

VB,Thank you for doing this.
I buried my brother June 4, 1987 in Houston, Tx. The AIDS quilt was created shortly after his death and was in Houston but sadly, I was in no shape to create a block for it.
This was the time when AIDS was a gay disease and uncertain still was the question if you could "catch it" from someone who was infected. I visited my brother, Damon, at the AIDS hospital and sadly I saw many die isolated, abandoned and heartbroke. My tribute is to my brother and all those men who died without a hand to hold.

I will be donating a print of this to the Minneapolis HRC Gala in September, 2007.
