Scratch Art
Close-up
Early Stage
This piece measures 18 by 24 inches. The medium for this work is called clayboard black. I first talked this medium to seventh graders during my student teaching. I was intrigued, but I wanted more than a black and white study. Around 12 years ago I found out that you could use water based inks to provide color. The process is long and tedious. There is over 120 hours of work in this piece. I had estimated at over 1/4 million scratches in this piece alone, with a tools the size of pins at the end of a long stylus. I documented the process with this particular piece. I believe I have around 40 photos of that process.
